Takeley Patios

A Wet Summer Teaches You Everything

Rain finds every weakness. I learned that back in Dublin, watching falls set wrong lift and crack before the first hard frost. That lesson came with me to Essex. Every patio we lay here in Takeley starts with proper drainage, proper falls, proper bedding. No shortcuts.

We have been doing this long enough to know that the surface material is only as good as what goes underneath it.

What We Work With

People ask us all the time what their options are for surfacing. Here is the honest rundown:

  • Porcelain tiles, large format and full rectified edge
  • Indian sandstone, riven or sawn finish
  • Concrete flagstones, reliable and hard-wearing
  • Natural limestone
  • Granite setts and cobbles
  • Block paving in a range of colours and bonds
  • Reconstituted stone flags
  • Gravel and resin-bound surfaces

Each one behaves differently under Essex weather. Porcelain is frost-proof and easy to keep clean. Sandstone breathes and ages well. Block paving (and we do a lot of it on driveways that roll into garden spaces) gives you flexibility in pattern. Concrete flags are underrated. Simple fact.

The Rest of What We Do

It is rarely just a patio. Most jobs we take on in and around Takeley involve a bit of everything. We install garden walling, timber fencing in close-board or panel, turfed lawns laid on properly prepared topsoil, and artificial grass for the spots that just will not grow.

A GAA man from Ballyboden St Enda’s told me once that a good pitch is all in the preparation. He was not wrong. Same rule applies here.

Paths, steps, edging kerbs, the lot. We tie it all together so the finished garden actually makes sense as a space.
