British weather does not forgive a bad build

Damp gets in. Frost heaves the ground. I have seen it undo years of work in one winter. That is why, at Bromley Builders, we take the groundwork and the finish equally seriously, whether we are laying a new driveway or rebuilding a garden wall from the footing up.

What we cover

We handle driveways, patios, and everything around them. The surfacing choices we work with most are:

• Block paving, both concrete and clay
• Tarmac and macadam surfacing
• Resin bound gravel, which drains through the surface rather than sheeting off it
• Natural stone flags and porcelain paving
• Exposed aggregate and brushed concrete
• Gravel and shingle with proper edging restraints

For patios specifically, we also work with Indian sandstone, limestone, and porcelain tiles suited to outdoor use. Materials matter. Cheap stone spalls. We use suppliers we trust.

Beyond the surface

A driveway is only as good as what sits underneath it. We dig out, assess the sub-base, and get the drainage right before anything goes down. Jobs near Crystal Palace and across towards Orpington have taught us that ground conditions vary more than people expect, even street to street.

Alongside surfacing work, we take on:

• Garden walling in brick or block
• Fencing installation and repair
• Lawn laying, both turf and prepared seed beds
• Edging, kerbing, and retaining walls
• General outdoor repair and maintenance

We fitted a new garage forecourt out near Beckenham last spring. (The owner had been patching tarmac for six years before finally calling us.) Clean job, done properly, sorted in a few days.
